What is “quid pro quo” harassment — and why is it the most under-reported form?
The PoSH Act recognises two types of harassment.
Most people know the hostile work environment type.
Fewer understand quid pro quo — and why it’s particularly dangerous.
Quid pro quo literally means “this for that.”
In a workplace context, it means:
🔴 “Be with me and I’ll give you the promotion.”
🔴 “If you don’t comply, your appraisal will suffer.”
🔴 “I can make your transfer happen — you know what I want.”
It involves a direct or implied exchange — sexual compliance in return for work benefits or to avoid work penalties.
Why is it under-reported?
→ The harasser is almost always in a position of power
→ The victim fears losing their job, promotion, or reputation
→ There are rarely witnesses
→ It often starts subtly and escalates gradually
Organisations must create reporting channels that feel genuinely safe and confidential — not just technically available.
